Where Can I Get a Copy of a Birth Certificate?

Birth certificates remain on file in the city or town where the person was born and in the city or town the person's parents lived in at the time of the birth. A person born in Watertown or whose parents lived in Watertown at the time of her/his birth, with some exceptions, may obtain a certified birth certificate at Watertown Town Clerk's Office.

How Much Does a Birth Certificate Cost?

A certified copy costs $10.00. The certified copy is necessary in order to obtain a passport and Massachusetts Real ID/Drivers License.

How Do I Get a Copy of a Birth Certificate?

  • By Mail: Allow 10-14 days
    • A written request must contain the following:
      • Name of individual
      • Date of birth
      • Parents' names
      • Number of copies ordered
      • Self Addressed envelope where to be mailed back
      • Cash, Check or money order in exact amount made payable to Town of Watertown
  • In Person: Town Clerk's Department, Ground Floor, Town Hall, during regular business hours. Payments may be made in the office or cash or check only. Checks are payable to the "Town of Watertown".
  • Online:  Payments can be made online with electronic check or credit cards. The electronic check option using checking account information is available for a small charge. Credit card payment is available for a convenience fee assessed per transaction by the Payment Service, not the Town.

The Town Clerk's office cannot accept requests for birth certificates via fax and does not accept orders via the telephone. A birth certificate, to be considered valid for purposes of obtaining a passport, employment, school registration, etc., cannot be a copy or on facsimile paper, Massachusetts Law requires that it be certified with the City Seal.

How Much Does a Death Certificate Cost?

A certified copy costs $10.00.
After the attending physician prepares and signs the certificate, it is the responsibility of the Funeral Director to file it with the Town of Watertown Health Department for verification and, in turn, transmitted to the Office of the Town Clerk for permanent recording and filing. Certified copies can be ordered for $10.00 each.
